Eight sons, one daughter, and two parents live out unusual lives in this documentary about surfer “Doc” Paskowitz and his brood. Surfers all, they travel from beach to beach, coast to coast–wherever the mood strikes–in a 24-foot camper which is their full-time home. They eat no sugar or fast food, and none of them go to school. Dad keeps regimental order which leads to champion surfing and an occasional punch in the head. The kids grow up, leave home, and generally want zilch to do with their father. The documentary is well directed, doesn’t lag, and has a natural narrative arc. At the I.F.C. showing I went to, David Paskowitz, one of the sons, did a Q&A. I think most in the audience were too stunned by this family’s story to ask anything much. [5/9/08]
